Infertility Consultation Q&A

How Long Should a Woman Try to Get Pregnant Before Seeking Advice?

The general consensus is that if a woman under the age of 35 has not conceived within a year of having regular, unprotected sex she and her partner may be facing infertility issues and should seek advice. For women over 35, if more than 6 months pass, specialist advice should be sought.

What Causes Infertility?

First, infertility is not a female specific issue. While women carry and bear the child, men play and equally important role when it comes to conceiving. In order to be fertile, a woman must have fully functional ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. Issue with any of these organs, like Polycystic ovary syndrome, issues with uterine contouring like fibroids or cysts or blocked fallopian tubes could be at fault. A woman’s age can also have an effect on her ability to conceive.  For men, infertility can be related to the concentration of sperm, its motility and its shape. Conditions like Varicoceles, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, trauma, infection or an unhealthy lifestyle can contribute to his inability to conceive.

How is Infertility Treated?

Infertility can be treated medically with prescriptions to increase ovulation or sperm production. Intrauterine insemination is another option, where sperm is injected into the uterus while the woman is ovulating. Other parents to be may try assisted reproductive technology. This could involve a combination of procedures like fertility medication, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization or surrogacy. The treatment prescribed depends on the root cause of the inability to conceive naturally.
