Dr. Bourara offers in-office pelvic ultrasounds for the convenience of his New York City patients at his practice in Astoria, Queens, NY.
A pelvic ultrasound uses soundwaves to create an image of the organs in the pelvic area. This is typically carried out on female patients, but male patients an also have them. The doctor is able to see the ovaries, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and the bladder for women and the prostate gland and seminal vesicles for men.
An ultrasound can be ordered for many reasons including:
Patients should wear loose and comfortable clothing for the ultrasound. He or she may need to disrobe below the waist and wear a gown for the same. Depending on the purpose of the ultrasound, patients may be advised to drink four to six glasses in advance of the screening. The exam itself is carried out in an ultrasound room at the doctor’s office or a hospital or clinic. The patient will lie on his or her back and gel will be applied to the belly to improve the sound wave quality. A transducer will be gently moved across the abdomen and image of the organs and blood vessels will be transferred to a screen. The patient will need to remain very still throughout the procedure, which normally takes around 30 minutes.
